John Cottom, aged 14, started work with his (maternal) uncle, Jimmy Gee, who had a butcher’s shop in Liverpool where he learned, amongst other things, how to make Pork Sausage (original recipe) and Black Puddings.

After leaving the army, John Cottom started the business at the back of his mother’s house and as he didn’t have a fridge at that time, he used the cellar to keep things cool. As meat was still on ration after the war, the first product to be produced was Black Pudding. Fortunately, John had secured a supply of pork fat from one of his old contacts in Liverpool.

Not long after, Arthur (brother and former prisoner of war) joined the business. Sausage and Black Puddings were made in a building in the backyard. Pork Pies were made in the kitchen.

Official Cottom Bros partnership was formed between John and Arthur.

Cottom Bros moved to premises on Kirkland Street (previously a stable for Co-op horses for their deliveries by horse and cart). This was a very hot summer and production of individual Hot Pots began.
